My component requests

Post by ZMan » August 26th, 2011, 5:44 pm

I quickly got tired of searching for components and reactions on my own, so I have decided to create this post to ask for the ones I need. I will keep searching, however, and if I find any of them I'll post them here, too.
Anyway, this is what I need by now: a gate that can be turned on/off to let a glider stream move. Best a stable one, or a p30n one.

You might try one of the Set/Reset Latches from Paul Rendell's Turing Machine
You can download or view them here:

At p30 I've found them to be useful in a great many modules.

Hmm, I know that this isn't quite what you're looking for, but it's small, stable, and very elegant:

#C Paul Callahan's bistable switch
x = 75, y = 61, rule = B3/S23
2bo$obo$b2o11$50bo$50b3o$53bo$52b2o2$45b2o17b2o$46bo17bo$46bobo13bobo$

61bo$60bobo$61b2o9$49b2o$48bobo$48bo$47b2o!

It has two inputs (A and B) and four outputs (A-->A, A-->B, B-->A, B-->B).
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

Here's one I nearly forgot.
Developed by forum contributor FCH, I thought that altering the on/off phasing of p60 action to create a latch was ingenious.
I optimized it slightly, eliminating two each Gosper guns at the cost of a pentadecathlon.
A couple of caveats:
1) You have to initiate the blocking reaction near the pentadecathlon with the correct glider. Deleting a glider 30 generations later will not change the state of the 'latch'. Reverting to the normal p60 reaction near the pentadecathlon can, however, be done by deleting any glider in the trigger stream.
2) The blocking of the p30 stream is not symetrical: that is, for the p960 kickback cycle of the trigger you get 18 gliders ON and 14 OFF.

Code: Select all

x = 103, y = 120, rule = B3/S23

$69b2o18bo!
Given that there are at least another dozen possibilities of p60 reaction, it would be nice if the p30 stream could be modulated directly, yielding a savings of yet another p30 gun. I have to think it is possible.
