Douglas G. Petrie was an early Life enthusiast who did pioneering work on still lifes and glider collisions. He first listed the 12 cell still lifes (simultaneously with Everett Boyer and David Buckingham) in 1973. That year, he also discovered the time bomb, a pattern that evolves into a glider-producing switch engine; an 11-glider synthesis for the lightweight Schick engine; the first 8-glider synthesis for a heavyweight spaceship; a synthesis for a block-laying switch engine; a 5-glider synthesis for pentadecathlon.
