Dueling banjos is a period-24 oscillator found (in tetramer form, via apgsearch) by Apple Bottom on January 10, 2019. It consists of two B-heptominos being hassled by two eater 1s and two block on tables.
Matthias Merzenich provided a monomer form which has cis-in, cis-out and trans isomers depending on the relative positions of the two blocks.[1]
Mark Niemiec posted a 19-glider synthesis of the oscillator on January 13th.[2]
Related patterns
Starting from an initial p24 gun by Tanner Jacobi,[3] Matthias Merzenich found a way to adjust the sparkers (HW emulator, 44P12.3 and pipsquirter 1) to produce a true period gun with a slightly smaller bounding box than the previous record-holder, p24 gun.[4] The population is somewhat larger, but this is not considered for most record-keeping purposes. The 44P12.3 and the pipsquirter 1 can each be placed in two possible orientations, allowing for the optimized p48 LWSS gun below.[5]
