Edwin Roger Banks was associated with the MIT group. In 1971, he constructed OCA:Banks-I, a two-state cellular automaton and one of the first simulated models of a universal computer, as part of his PhD thesis. In collaboration with the group, he discovered the first Garden of Eden that year.
