Honey thieves is a period-17 oscillator, consisting of a honey farm predecessor hassled by 4 eater 1s. It is the smallest known period 17 oscillator in terms of minimum population, though 54P17.1 still has a slightly smaller bounding box.
It was discovered by Matthias Merzenich in September 2014[1] with a modified version of Dean Hickerson's drifter search program, that facilitates discovery of symmetric oscillators.[2]
Mark Niemiec found a 17-glider synthesis of this oscillator.[3]
A 15-glider synthesis was found in November 2021, quickly followed by a 13-glider synthesis.[4][5]
