Hydra is a single-channel spiral growth pattern. It was constructed by Oscar Cunningham and Dave Greene with slmake in November 2017. Being the first response to a single-channel quadratic growth challenge, the pattern is also named QGC1.

Similar to the forerunner spiral growth, the construction recipes used by Hydra are stored in a compact double spiral of gliders and Snarks. However, instead of simply building a Snark at eact corner, the pattern constructs a Scorbie Splitter, a glider duplicator with one 0-degree and one 90-degree output. Both outputs are aimed at an elbow to continue construction.

Hydra ranked seventh place in the Pattern of the Year 2017 competition on the ConwayLife.com forums, tied with sparse Cordership.[1]
