Lightweight emulator is a period-4 oscillator found by Robert Wainwright in June 1980[1] that produces sparks similar to those produced by the lightweight spaceship. It is the smallest and least useful of the three standard emulators.

This oscillator first appeared semi-naturally in September 2016.[2] A 13-glider synthesis is known for a stator variant[3] featuring loaves; with appropriate component to convert them to pre-blocks, the canonical form can be synthesized from 21 gliders.[4] On January 22, 2023, the synthesis was reduced to 15 gliders based on a soup-based reaction that generates the canonical variant directly.[5] Larger, higher-clearance sparkers are shown below.
