The mathematician is a period-5 oscillator that was found in 1972 by David Buckingham.[1] A variant of it first appeared semi-naturally in April 2016.[2]

A 99-glider synthesis of this oscillator was found by Inferno on August 2, 2021 based on a final step posted by iNoMed.[3] Over the next few days, this was reduced by iNoMed, wwei23, MathAndCode, Tanner Jacobi, and Martin Grant to 28 gliders.[4][5]
