Middleweight emulator is a period-4 oscillator found by Robert Wainwright in June 1980.[1] It is one of the three standard emulators and produces sparks similar to those of the middleweight spaceship. It is often used in the construction of larger oscillators, such as 145P20.
A four-fold version of this oscillator appeared semi-naturally in April 2016.[2]
"Middleweight emulator" most often refers to the "cis" variant displayed to the right with higher clearance on one side; there is also a less-used "trans" variant of this oscillator with equal clearance on both sides.

Variants
A larger but higher-clearance mechanism is known, that has been used as a catalyst in CatForce searches by Carson Cheng and Mitchell Riley, the latter of whom found a variant of the p4-assisted period-28 glider gun using two copies of it.
