A null reaction is a reaction with a catalyst or sparker that is equivalent to if the catalyst or sparker was not there. The term was popularised and possibly created by David Raucci, although he incorrectly believed the term was already in common use at the time.

x = 17, y = 6, rule = B3/S23 15bo$14bobo$15bo2$4o7b4o$3b2o9b2o! #C [[ THUMBSIZE 2 THEME 6 GRID GRIDMAJOR 0 SUPPRESS THUMBLAUNCH ]] #C [[ GPS 3 THUMBSIZE 2 WIDTH 660 ]]
A tub is acting as a rock here, but the hexomino dies out
in the same way whether the tub is there or not.

This is a period-18 sparker. The first interaction with the
two period-6 sparkers is required for the oscillator to function,
but the second is a null reaction — some of the sparks
evolve differently, but it doesn't affect the overall evolution.
