p196 pi-heptomino hassler is a period-196 oscillator completed by praosylen on July 2, 2021[1] based on a partial result by David Raucci.[2] It consists of two rotationally symmetric pi-heptominoes interacting with each other in addition to hitting block and eater 2 catalysts. After a half cycle, it flips along a diagonal axis. At 66 cells, it was the smallest known period-196 oscillator by population until the discovery of mold on 44P49 in November 2023.
Within a few hours of its discovery, Jeremy Tan found a 24-glider synthesis of the oscillator.[3] On January 14, 2024, KtT lowered the cost to 23 gliders.[4][5]
Several SKOPs consisting of this p196 and another oscillator were known until they were beaten by LCMs involving 44P49.
