p45 pi-heptomino hassler is a period-45 oscillator found by Luke Kiernan on August 9, 2022.[1] Although other pi-heptomino hasslers with this period have been found previously, this one is by far the smallest, with only 29 cells in its minimum phase. It is also the smallest p45 oscillator overall, surpassing the 48-cell pentadecathlon on thumb 1.
Being a versatile sparker, the oscillator can be turned into a glider gun in several different ways.[2] The smallest of these has a bounding box of 33 × 24, formerly making it the smallest known gun with an odd period.[note 1] Using a queen bee shuttle as a filter, a p90 gun can also be created with a bounding box of only 33 × 32, the smallest known for this period.[3] The p45 itself can filter a period-30 glider stream to p90, resulting in an alternative gun.[4] The oscillator can also reflect gliders 180 degrees, and so two copies can be used to produce an oscillator with period 180 + 360n and a population of 63, as discovered by Jeremy Tan.[5]
Carson Cheng found a 10-glider synthesis of this oscillator on the day of its discovery.[6] He then found a 9-glider synthesis of a variant on September 3, 2023.[7]
