p49 pi-heptomino hassler is a period-49 oscillator found by Nico Brown on April 18, 2023.[1] With a minimum population of 98 cells, it was the smallest known period-49 oscillator until the discovery of 44P49.
Two copies minus the ship+fishhook catalyst at one end (for each one) can create a p49 glider gun.
There are 3 different forms of the oscillator because the block catalysts that the pi-heptominoes hit to split in two symmetrically can be moved by one cell.
A 52-glider synthesis for a variant with fishhooks instead of snakes (Catagolue: here) was found in May 2023.[2] Chris857 lowered the cost to 50 gliders on December 24, 2023,[3][4] and then to 48 gliders the next day.[5][6] On April 10, 2024, KtT found a 41-glider synthesis of the cheaper variant and a 42-glider synthesis of the canonical form.[7][8]
