p86 R-pentomino hassler is a period-86 oscillator found by Nico Brown on September 22, 2022.[1] It is the third-smallest period-86 oscillator, after the 76-cell 76P86 and a 78-cell capped period-43 glider gun whose period is doubled by a boat-bit reaction.
Statorless p86
On the day of its discovery, iNoMed noted that the underlying reaction in this oscillator can produce a statorless Herschel factory, with the Herschels originally absorbed by eater 1s. After that, Nico Brown pointed out that the output Herschels can be connected to the SW-2 Herschel-to-glider conduit, whose first natural glider gets absorbed and doesn't interfere with the oscillator. As the beehive is transparent in this conduit, this makes a strictly volatile period-86 oscillator.[2] This makes 86 one of the only 15 integers which are periods of at least one known strictly volatile oscillator that does not utilize self-constructing circuitry.

Glider synthesis
A 30-glider synthesis for the canonical form shown in the infobox was found by KtT on October 4, 2023[3][4] (improving over a previously known 36-glider synthesis shown below).

iNoMed found a 24-glider synthesis of the strictly volatile variant on the day after its discovery.[5]
