Peter Rott made many contributions to Life, often in collaboration with his good friend Dietrich Leithner. By 1996, when he became known to the wider Life community, their combined discoveries totalled several thousand files filled with interesting Life patterns. At that time, the duo were investigating glider guns of minimal area. These were not limited to true-period guns; they found pseudo-period guns of periods 14, 15, and 23. They collaborated to find and catalogue glider guns of minimal areas, known as Dieter and Peter's gun collection.

Between 1992 and 1994, he discovered many examples of superstrings for a variety of periods. In 1997, he discovered the MWSS out of the blue reaction.
