The pi splitter is a catalyst found by codeholic using Bellman in August 2013, transforming ("splitting") a pi-heptomino into two gliders.[1] It consists of a regenerative loop used to regenerate a tub motif. A glider synthesis for a reduced form of the catalyst was completed by Extrementhusiast later the same month.[2]
In May 2022, ljkiernan1 found a Spartan replacement consisting of two beehives and two tubs, using mvr's symmetric version of CatForce.[3]
The catalyst is widely used in glider guns[note 1] and other engineered patterns.
