Pond is an 8-cell still life discovered by the JHC group in 1970.[1] It is the smallest lake, followed by the 24-cell lake 2.
Commonness
The pond is the sixth most common still life in Achim Flammenkamp's census, being slightly less common than tub and more common than ship.[2] It is also the nineth most common object on Adam P. Goucher's Catagolue.[3]
Prepond
The prepond is a common predecessor of the pond. It is important because it makes about 54% of ponds. The prepond turns into a pond in 32 Life-like rules, from B3/S23 to B378/S23678, but it dies out in HighLife. Consequently, the pond occurs more than twice as commonly in Game of Life than in HighLife.
