Rich's p16 is a period-16 oscillator that was found by Rich Holmes on July 5, 2016 using Adam P. Goucher's apgsearch.[1] It consists of a bi-boat interacting with unnamed objects that then create two more boats, but flipped.
It can slightly interact with a rock snake-type object in a non-trivial way.[2] It can also act as a T-nose.
It can act as a filter doubling periods of glider streams that are multiples of 8 but not 16,[3] as well as delete half of the gliders of a stream that is a multiple of 4 but not 8 (in consecutive pairs) to allow two copies to act as a period-quadrupler.[4] Tanner Jacobi and Michael Simkin used these on the day of its discovery to optimise various guns.
Rich's p16 also makes banana sparks, allowing for interesting reactions.
Synthesis
BlinkerSpawn found an 18-glider synthesis of Rich's p16 on the day of its discovery,[5] which Mark Niemiec noticed could be reduced to 17 gliders.[6] Martin Grant improved this synthesis to 16 gliders on July 13.[7] BlinkerSpawn subsequently found a 14-glider synthesis on June 27, 2017,[8] Alex Greason and Goldtiger997 together reduced the synthesis to 12 gliders on October 18, 2019,[9] and Carson Cheng reduced it to 10 gliders on June 9, 2024.[10]
