Transition can refer to:
- a shortened form of the more correct transition rule
- an ordered pair (current cellstate, new cellstate). There are n^2 possible transitions in a n-state rule. If one requires the two cellstates to be different, like in the dictionary definition for 'transition', there are n^2-n such ordered pairs.
