Background

3b2o$4bo$o3bo$b3o! is the 46th most common region in census.rle, although the generation of convergence is two generations after the RLE given in the title of this page and shown in the viewers below. The census.rle document itself gives a 6-generation predecessor of the shown generation plus a four-cell spark, although this isn't the most common way for it to form.

Being ranked 46th, and with census.rle roughly following Zipf's law, it is about 0.3 times as common as the U-turner (#16 plus a 30-generation predecessor ranked #47) and about 0.4 times as common as octomino II (#26 and #39) and the R-turner (#18). The octo3obj database indicates that the 3b2o$4bo$o3bo$b3o! is slightly rarer than census.rle (advanced at least 8 generations because otherwise it's before the convergence point) indicates, but not by much.

The active region becomes a boat and a pi-heptomino (that unusually forms from in front rather than from behind), which collides with the boat, stabilizing at generation 124 leaving a beehive and two blocks.

The region saw interest because it was recognised as an intermediate in the walrus to glider converter.

A proposed name for the pattern is "Thorn", after the Old English letter þ.
