Admin Request

I would like to become an admin. I am currently a Wikipedia editor, and I noticed that this site had not been recently updated. I'll do anything I can to help. Philipnelson99 (talk) 23:38, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to LifeWiki! First of all, one doesn't have to be an admin in order to contribute. And secondly, what made you think this wiki hasn't been recently updated? Codeholic (talk) 04:41, 21 September 2015 (UTC)

Thanks

Howdy, just wanted to say thanks for the "trusted" flag! Apple Bottom (talk) 12:08, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

No problem! Should've gotten around to it a while ago, honestly. Nathaniel (talk) 16:34, 19 March 2016 (UTC)

Pattern files for still lifes

Howdy, I wanted to let you know I've started creating entries for smaller still lifes (11-bitters so far) that don't yet have any. I think you're the only one who can upload RLE files for the patterns and their syntheses, right? Would be mighty cool if you could thus complete those entries when you get around to it. I'll also let you know when I'm done with the 11-bitters. Best, Apple Bottom (talk) 12:13, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Actually any of the mods can (so me, dvgrn, Sokwe, codeholic... maybe some others, I forget ;)). I'll add it to my list. I can also quickly upload any RLEs that you e-mail to me (support@conwaylife.com). Cheers! Nathaniel (talk) 15:27, 22 March 2016 (UTC)
Great! I've created all the remaining articles for the 11-bit still lives; will look into emailing you the RLEs soon. BTW, since the RLEs for the syntheses are all on Mark Niemiec's site already, would it be considered improper to simply copy those over from there? Apple Bottom (talk) 14:25, 24 March 2016 (UTC)

Pattern for 112P15

Nathaniel, if you'd be so kind -- I've added a page for 112P15, a previously-unknown (AFAICT) oscillator that appeared on Catagolue; here's the RLE for the pattern:

Would be great if you could add this to the entry. Thanks! Apple Bottom (talk) 21:10, 5 April 2016 (UTC)

Vivarium

Hi! I'm new to the wiki, but not to wikis in general or to life. Last year I started developing a project for Wikipedia called WikiWidgets that adds interactive JavaScript widgets to Wikipedia articles. The project is already deployed in the Spanish Wikipedia, and the second widget I developed was for Conway's Game of Life. The widget is called Vivarium and you can see it live at the Spanish Wikipedia here. A nice thing about the way these widgets are implemented is that they can be easily added to any MediaWiki wiki, such as this one. All that you would need to do is add the following line to MediaWiki:Common.js:

if ( $( '.WikiWidget' ).length ) {
	mw.loader.load( '//commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:WikiWidgets.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );
}

This line will load the initialization code for the widgets every time a div with the class 'WikiWidget' is found. Such a div can be inserted into any article through the Template:Vivarium that I already created. This template also allows users to define which cells should start out alive (scroll down the article in the Spanish Wikipedia to see a demo). Thus, this widget has the potential to illustrate every single article about a pattern with a working mini version of the game itself! I cannot think of anything more appropriate for this wiki, I hope you'll agree. If you add the code to MediaWiki:Common.js, you should be able to see a working demo with a collection of oscillators at my userpage. Cheers! --Felipe (talk) 03:50, 26 April 2016 (UTC)

Oh and by the way, would you mind changing my username to Felipe Schenone (nobody calls me Luis). I checked your Special:Version page and you don't seem to have the Renameuser extension installed, but installing it is easy (if you don't know how to, you may want to consider hiring me for one hour, I can do marvels heh). I'm trying to unify my identity throughout the Internet and would really appreciate this. Thanks, thanks, thanks! --Felipe (talk) 18:11, 3 May 2016 (UTC)
Hi there. First off, my apologies for not responding to this sooner. Thanks very much for introducing you to your Vivarium project, which is very nice. However, we are actually in the process of rolling out another similar project on the wiki (which has been live on the forums here for some time now). In addition to being consistent with our forums, this viewer is very fast and able to handle large patterns, and has a wide variety of advanced features (e.g., other cellular automata support) that have been added in over the past few years. Here is an example of our viewer in action:
3o$o$bo

All the best. Nathaniel (talk) 02:02, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

That's excellent, thanks a lot for integrating the LifeViewer applet into the wiki! Now all we need to figure out is how to best use this in articles.
I'd like some community discussion on this before unilaterally making sweeping changes across the entire wiki. Given we seem to have been lacking a central discussion page so far, I thus also took the liberty of creating the LifeWiki:Tiki bar, modelled (in spirit at the very least) on Wikipedia's Village pump, Wiktionary's Beer parlour etc. This should also lessen the load on your own talk page a bit. ;)
I've started by putting down some thoughts on LV:Viewer integration there. Would be great if we can get a constructive discussion going so we can make the most of the applet! Apple Bottom (talk) 11:14, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

Handling categories for spaceship directions in Template:Spaceship

Howdy Nathaniel, I was wondering whether it wouldn't be a good idea to let Template:Spaceship handle categories for spaceship directions -- i.e. by automatically putting ships into the proper category.

Right now we only have Category:Oblique spaceships, which has four members that were all added manually; Category:Diagonal spaceships and Category:Orthogonal spaceships don't exist, though Demonoid had been placed in the former.

I think having all three categories would be valuable, and given that Template:Spaceship already takes a parameter for direction, it would be natural to use to populate them automatically.

Normally I'd have just jumped in and made the change myself, but the template's protected and I can't edit it. So I'm proposing this here instead. ;) (Is there a way to protect pages in such a manner that, say, users with the "trusted" flag can edit them even if they're not administrators?) Apple Bottom (talk) 20:28, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

Good idea, thanks. I've modified the protection on the Spaceship template so that any "trusted" user can edit it. Just send me a quick message any time there are other protected pages you want to be able to edit. Nathaniel (talk) 14:59, 12 May 2016 (UTC)
Wonderful! I've gone ahead and made the change, and also added the relevant categories, supporting templates, parent categories etc. Apple Bottom (talk) 18:17, 12 May 2016 (UTC)

Changing protection levels

Howdy! There's a few more pages I'd like to be able to edit but which are currently fully protected, so in light of what you said above, if you could change their protection levels so trusted users can edit them, that'd be excellent.

Here's a list, along with what I'd like to do:

I'm sure there'll be more eventually, but this is it for now. Thank you! Apple Bottom (talk) 11:30, 14 May 2016 (UTC)

Wrong RLE

Howdy, on a related note, I noticed the RLE for Killer candlefrobras is incorrect. The linked RLE snippet is for the "Killer candlefrobras eating HWSS" reaction (File:Killercandlefrobraseatinghwss.png); same for the Life 1.05, Life 1.06 and Plaintext files. The correct RLE for the pattern itself is this:

x = 21, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
4bo11bo$2obob2obo3bob2obob2o$2obo3bobobobo3bob2o$3bo4bo3bo4bo$3b2o11b

Would be great if you could fix this. Thanks! (And I also do apologize for posting so many messages on your talk page here, but unfortunately all this is work I cannot do myself.) Apple Bottom (talk) 11:15, 16 May 2016 (UTC)

Changing protection levels (2nd)

Howdy, could you (or another sysop) be so kind and change the protection level of the following pages to allow edits by Trusted users?

I'd like to do some housekeeping on these (details are in the task list on my user page), but can't right now. Thanks! Apple Bottom (talk) 22:23, 22 July 2016 (UTC)
