The vanishing dual of a rule is a rule such that any still life in the original rule vanishes after one tick in the vanishing dual.

More precisely, the vanishing dual is defined as the rule in which the original rule's birth conditions remain the same, but survival conditions are negated. For example, the vanishing dual of B3/S23 (Conway's Game of Life) is B3/S0145678.

Vanishing duals can be defined for totalistic, semi-totalistic, isotropic non-totalistic and anisotropic rules; the vanishing dual will be in the same class.
