Confused eaters is a period-4 oscillator that was found by David Buckingham no later than 1972.[1] It consists of two eater 1s hassling a nine.

This oscillator first appeared naturally on March 21, 2020, in a haul submitted to Catagolue by Rob Liston.[2][3] A subsequent occurrence allowed for a 13-glider synthesis by goldenratio on July 28, which was reduced to 9 gliders by Mark Niemiec and Tanner Jacobi later the same day.[4] On June 23, 2024, Carson Cheng reduced it to 8 gliders.[5][6] Of note, this synthesis has the gliders approaching in two streams at 90° to each other.

Lifeline Volume 11, p. 16 shows a phase shift in which one confused-eaters may use another's stable pre-block rock as an eater head.

This has a 14-glider synthesis as a corollary of Cheng's 6-glider synthesis component, which can attach to heads of confusions as well as eaters.

As well as chains of nested confusions, this allows a tetramer to be formed.
