Generation

A generation (or step[1] or tick[2]) is the fundamental unit of time in a cellular automaton such as Conway's Game of Life. The starting pattern is generation 0, the pattern after applying the rules once is generation 1, and so on. The term "step" is particularly used in describing conduits. For example, a 64-step conduit is one through which the active object takes 64 generations to pass.
