Heart is a period-5 oscillator that is shown as the sixth pattern in the first row of Jason Summers' main period 5 collection. It was found by Robert Wainwright in January 1982 and independently discovered by David Buckingham on August 15, 1984.[1]

A 15-glider synthesis was discovered by Jason Summers in November 2004[2] for a stator variant[c 1] of this oscillator in which each side is stabilized by two blocks instead of a tub.

A four-fold version of the oscillator appeared semi-naturally in November 2014 in a soup found by Richard Schank.[3] A 10-glider synthesis of this version was found in May 2023.[c 2] Earlier known syntheses of this variant include a 12G synthesis[c 3] and a 14G synthesis[c 4].

A monomerised version later appeared in an asymmetric soup in May 2016.[4] A 13-glider synthesis of this version was found on the same day.[5] A 12-glider synthesis was found at some point later.[c 5]

Copies of the heart may also act as rocks to mutually stabilise an unnamed period-5 rotor at two different phase shifts (though the rotor's minimal form doesn't involve them). All such uses at this orientation may also be achieved by stator components (that don't require the stabilised object's period to be a multiple of 5), the only use for hearts in particular is to increase the volatility.
