Hooks is a period-5 oscillator that is shown as the second pattern in the third row of Jason Summers' main period 5 collection, and also as the first pattern in the fourth row of Jason Summers' period 5 billiard collection.[1] A stator variant of this oscillator, featuring a carrier in place of a snake, appeared naturally on February 7, 2020, in a soup submitted to Catagolue by Rob Liston.[2]

Synthesis

Hooks can be converted from xs15_3pm86246 (whose synthesis was reduced from 8 to 7 gliders by KtT on August 31, 2024[3]) in 4 gliders.[4] The conversion also works for the carrier variant, whose predecessor still life xs15_3pm8628c has a 6G synthesis from August 30, 2022.

There is also a conversion from xs17_31e8628czw33 (which has an 8G synthesis) in 6G, which also works for the carrier variant.
