Disagreements on LifeWiki are normal. LifeWiki users are expected to engage in good faith to resolve their disputes, and must not personalise disputes. Many disputes can be resolved without external input, through gradual editing, discussion, and attempts to understand the legitimate objections of others.
Resolving a dispute
When a dispute arises between LifeWiki users, the following procedure should be followed:
- Try to resolve it yourselves. Discuss amongst yourselves to see if you can find a common ground. If relevant or possible, improve the content under dispute to the point where it is no longer under dispute, rather than just reverting and/or removing it.
- If an agreement cannot be found among yourselves, post on the LifeWiki discussion forum for feedback from other members of the community. Try to reach a consensus about the appropriate course of action.
- A moderator may intervene to stop an edit war; do not revert their actions on the wiki. Optionally, they may protect/lock the content that is disputed. The content may be reverted to its pre-dispute state for the duration of the dispute. Once consensus has been reached (e.g., in the forum thread from Step 2), the content will be unlocked so that the agreed upon edits can be implemented.
- Disengage. Most situations are not actually urgent; there are no deadlines on LifeWiki, and perfection is not required. If you are still not happy with the outcome after the previous three steps, leave the dispute for at least a week.
- If the conflict is still not resolved, you can contact a moderator (alternatively, post in this forum thread) and ask them to make an executive decision. Point them to the thread created in Step 2 and any additional context that may be needed to understand the dispute. By getting a moderator involved, you are asking them to decide what happens – please try to live with whatever that decision is. Optionally, if a dispute carries on for a long time (e.g., more than 2 weeks) without a clear path towards consensus, a moderator may initiate this step themselves. If you disagree with their decision, do not revert their actions on the wiki.
- Disengage. Again, for at least a week. The result of most disputes will not critically affect the lifeblood of LifeWiki. Disengage and consider whether the time and energy spent on this dispute is worth it, or could be better spent improving things elsewhere on the wiki.
- If you disagree with the moderator's decision and it seems like an important enough issue to escalate, you can message another moderator for a second opinion. If they disagree with the decision or action of the moderator from Step 5, the moderators will hold a private vote among themselves to decide the course of action. Moderators will normally have one week to vote. The result of the vote will be communicated in the thread from Step 2, that thread will be locked, and the matter will be considered closed.
