The Margolus neighbourhood is the most well-known example of a block cellular automaton neighbourhood, and was first described by Norman Margolus. This neighbourhood partitions the grid into 2 × 2 blocks which shift by one cell diagonally each generation. A cell's neighbourhood in a given generation therefore consists of all cells currently within that cell's block.
