Middleweight volcano is a period-5 oscillator that was found by Dean Hickerson on April 6, 1992[1] that produces sparks much like a middleweight spaceship.

Synthesis

On July 7, 2021, MathAndCode and wwei23 found the final step of a synthesis.[2] Three days later, Extrementhusiast completed it using a different final step, creating an 88-glider synthesis.[3] A reduction to 81 gliders was found in July 2023,[4][5] which is the current minimum known.
