Pseudo Life is a Life-like cellular automaton with rulestring B357/S238. It is a chaotic rule with evolution that resembles Conway's Life, but almost none of the engineered patterns work.

Description

Pseudo Life is a Life-like cellular automaton with the following evolution rules:

  • A dead cell with 3, 5 or 7 alive neighbours will be born in the next generation; otherwise, the cell will remain dead.
  • An alive cell with 2, 3 or 8 alive neighbours will survive in the next generation; otherwise the cell will die.

Viewed as the set of neighbour-counting conditions for birth and survival, the rule definition may be seen as the union of Grounded Life (B35/S23), DryLife (B37/S23) and EightLife (B3/S238). The presence of B5 has the largest effect on the evolution, causing engineered patterns from Life to fail. In contrast, many patterns either do not depend on presence of B7 and S8, or function without them in an analogous way.

Naturally occurring objects in this rule include[1] oscillators of periods 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12, 18, 36,[2] the small 2c/5 orthogonal and c/3 orthogonal spaceships (shown below), as well as a period-248 mod-124 c/2 orthogonal puffer that leaves one block and one traffic light after every 124 generations. There are also seminatural oscillators of periods 6, 10, 14, 16, 21, 24, 34, 35, 48, 64, 98.

Known spaceship speeds are[3] c/2o, c/3o, c/4o, c/5o,[4] 2c/5o, c/6o,[5] 2c/6o,[6] c/7o,[7] 2c/7o,[8] c/4d.

Based on the natural puffer, there are engineered c/2 orthogonal spaceships of periods 24 (2-engine[10]), 56 (2-engine[10]), 72 (6-engine[11]).

On December 10, 2022, FWKnightship constructed a 24c/48 siderake emitting 2c/5o spaceships.[9] The siderake works by incrementally building a tub+blinker constellation and then sparking it into a collision between the tub and a beehive spark.

A gun had been constructed and published by confocaloid on December 28, 2023 [23]. It shoots a 2c/5 orthogonal glider 3736 in each period (1078).

By July 2021, the b357s238/C1 census on Catagolue accumulated 750 million objects.[24] The C1 census reached a total of 30 billion objects on March 16, 2023.[25]

Simulation of circuits

The most promising way to get a constructive proof for weak Turing-completeness in the future, is glider circuitry, a plausible method to construct W110 unit cells. On May 27, 2023, user confocaloid constructed[26] a 90-degree periodic reflector for the glider 3736[22] using period 98 oscillators, with several variants including transparent output lanes.
