p3 bumper is a variant of Tanner Jacobi's bumper found by Arie Paap in April 2018.[1][2] It has a repeat time of 36 ticks, and the timing of the output glider is different from the stable Snark reflector, making it useful for rephasing periodic glider streams.
The form shown in the infobox uses a 24-cell p3 oscillator[3] and has a smaller population. This variant was used in a 152-cell p57 bumper loop,[4] the formerly smallest period-57 oscillator, as well as the smallest p69, p81 and p129 ones. All of these have been superseded by 146-cell glider shuttles with a new mechanism.[5]

Variants
An alternative form[6] of the period-3 sparker based on the caterer is shown below to the left. For bounding box optimization purposes, it is also possible to replace the eater 1 with a 33P3.1, saving one row along the south edge at the cost of a higher population, as shown to the right. This also works with a p6 bumper, p9 bumper, or p15 bumper.
