p85 R-pentomino hassler is a period-85 oscillator found by Luke Kiernan and reduced to its current form by David Raucci on August 26, 2022.[1] In terms of its minimum population of 68 cells, it is the smallest known oscillator of this period, surpassing 74P85. It consists of two R-pentominoes being hassled by two blocks, two eater 1s, and two fumaroles.
A period-85 glider gun was found on August 31, 2022,[2] becoming the new smallest known gun with this period[3].
A 32-glider synthesis was completed by Carson Cheng shortly after discovery of the oscillator.[4] A 29-glider synthesis was completed by KtT on December 2, 2023.[5][6] On December 3, 2023, Chris857 lowered the cost to 28 gliders.[7][8]
