Richard "Rich" Schroeppel is an experimental mathematician and Life enthusiast currently residing in the United States. He was a member of the MIT group that studied Life in the early 1970s, and his work with Roger Banks, Steve Ward, and Mike Beeler led to the proof that a rectangle of only 9 × 33 cells contains a Garden of Eden and the discovery of the first Garden of Eden.[1]

He remained an active Life enthusiast through the 1990s, when he moderated LifeCA, an email-based CA discussion group that covered primarily Conway's Life but also many dozens of other Life-like rules.

Schroeppel is credited with coining the term blonk in 1992.
