38P7.2 is an unnamed period-7 oscillator discovered by Nicolay Beluchenko on February 17, 2009.[1] It provides four sparks in generation 4 that are useful in creating p7 bumper as well as non-trivial oscillators of higher periods such as snacker on 38P7.2. A variation of this oscillator can be created by displacing one half of the oscillator by two cells.

It first appeared semi-naturally in March 2016.[2] gmc_nxtman found an 18-glider synthesis of this oscillator on August 13, 2017.[3] Goldtiger997 improved this to 14 gliders on February 12, 2018,[4] and Carson Cheng improved it to 12 gliders June 9, 2024.[5]

In March 2018, Josh Ball found a pattern that can be stabilized by copies of 38P7.2 without blocks.[6]

In May 2022, Charity Engine found meatball, in the C2_1 census on Catagolue. It has some of the same utility as 38P7.2, in a slightly smaller package.[7]
