Star is a period-3 oscillator that was found by Hartmut Holzwart on February 16, 1993.[1] It is one of the few known oscillators that is a polyomino in one of its phases. In August, 2004 Jason Summers found a 20-glider synthesis of this oscillator.[2]

A related period-3 oscillator is 4 blocks on star, where four blocks are diagonally connected to and hassled by the star. Any or all of the blocks are optional; if present they are lethargic beacons. A glider synthesis of this oscillator was found in August 2021.[3]

One in 35,000 odd-width eightfold symmetric soups (D8_1) form a star in the centre.

Star is named after generation 2 of its evolution

Four partial copies of the star can mutually stabilise partial copies of the cross joining them to form a larger loop-shaped period-3 oscillator, as appeared in a D8_4 soup submitted to Catagolue by Charity Engine on 2022-11-12.
