Tanner's p46 is a period-46 oscillator that was found by Tanner Jacobi on October 20, 2017[1] involving a pi-heptomino running a small conduit containing a PT8P and a PT38P.
Tanner's p46 ranked second place in the Pattern of the Year 2017 competition on the ConwayLife.com forums, behind the 2-engine Cordership.[2]
Synthesis
Mark Niemiec posted a trivial 19-glider synthesis of Tanner's p46 two hours after its discovery.[3] This can be reduced to 15 gliders to produce a stator variant[4] that replaces the two snakes with eater 1s.
Uses
Tanner's p46 gives out phi sparks, making it useful for gun constructions. For example, David Bell used Tanner's p46 and a twin bees shuttle to build a period 46 glider gun (shown below) on October 21, 2017.[5]

The same day, Matthias Merzenich built a p46 gliderless MWSS gun using two copies of Tanner's p46[6] (shown below). In June 2018, Nathaniel Johnston built a p46 gliderless LWSS gun using three copies of the oscillator.[7]
