A boat-tie consisting of a pair, or boats

Tie is a term used in naming certain still lifes (and the stator of certain oscillators) that indicates that the object consists of two smaller objects joined point to point, as in boat-tie. Other examples include ship-tie and boat tie ship.

"Tie" is used for cases where a cell that, in a lone object, would survive as S2e, and as part of the combined object survive as S3k. For other cases, "bridge" and "at" are used instead.
