Toaster (or lightweight volcano) is a period-5 oscillator that was found by Dean Hickerson on April 1, 1992[1] that produces sparks much like a lightweight spaceship on its left and right sides. Minimal changes can be done to change its symmetry type.
On November 19, 2021, Dongook Lee and Entity Valkyrie observed that a toaster can be phase shifted to produce an oscillator of period 5n + 2.[2]
Commonness
A stator variant of this oscillator appeared semi-naturally on April 27, 2018, in a symmetric soup submitted to Catagolue by Apple Bottom[3], and another on February 16, 2022, by Charity Engine[4].
As of May 30, 2023, no variants with less than order-4 symmetry have occurred seminaturally.
Variants
There exist multiple smaller oscillators that give off LWSS sparks on only a single side.
smaller-population (41 cells) but higher-bounding-box (16 × 13) asymmetric period-5 LWSS emulator (click above to open LifeViewer) Catagolue: here |
42-cell 15 × 11 variant, as used in the smallest period-40 glider gun (click above to open LifeViewer) Catagolue: here |
53-cell 19 × 9 lower-clearance variant used to minimise bounding box, such as in the p5 hotcrystal0 colour-preserving reflector. (click above to open LifeViewer) Catagolue: here |
