Turtle is an c/3 orthogonal spaceship found by Dean Hickerson in August 1989. It is one of few non-standard spaceships that also works in the HighLife rule. The domino spark that the turtle produces at its back was essential in the creation of the first sawtooth pattern, sawtooth 1212.

Glider synthesis

On December 3, 2020, Goldtiger997 posted a final step for a glider synthesis of this spaceship.[1] The following day, Goldtiger997 found a synthesis for the final base constellation, giving a 241-glider synthesis of the spaceship.[2]

Later reductions of the synthesis cost included a 240G synthesis (April 26, 2021),[3] a 237G synthesis (May 15, 2021),[4] a 228G synthesis (August 27, 2021),[5] a 227G synthesis (October 4, 2021),[6] a 226G synthesis (August 21, 2022),[7] a 225G synthesis (November 28, 2022).[8]

As of March 8, 2023, cheapest known glider construction of the turtle uses 225 gliders.[9]
