here I present a collection of eight GUMs, or gliderGun Useless Machines, all by me (and in part Bill Gosper i guess)
gum 1 and 2 were posted here before as the "loaf flipper" and "cool failed eater oscillator"
Surprisingly all of these reactions are known. (as "sparking" oscillators)

Consider making more discoveries in OCA.
Also, the "seed" as you called is glider synthesis . Seed is a constellation that becomes a pattern when hit by a glider in a specific position.

It's best not to doublepost in a single thread. Click the pencil button to edit your post. I used it to make this edit.
That's known and not interesting. Consider trying to make conduits.

EDIT 2:
Please copy a pattern then paste RLE into the "identify pattern" in https://catagolue.hatsya.com/object to verify if it's known (by checking the "Sample occurence").

If you place a block in a fleet it will flip the fleet.

Code: Select all

Sorry, but that's well known. It's even mentioned in the fleet wiki page.
LifeWiki wrote:Drawing a block between the two ship-ties will result in the block being eaten and the fleet being inverted. A 4 cell long diagonal line running parallel through the centre will do the same in just 4 generations.
I also warned you not to doublepost in the thread. USE the edit button.

Glider syntheses are also seeds (predecessors).
In comparison, what you described is a one-glider seed.

This took me like a week or two to build, and I've finally completed the whole thing.
I made a new p17280 otca unit life cell (with a somewhat decent display):
Congrats! Show me how to change the rule emulated by the metacell.

Well, I named it "NSRC Metacell" for "neighboring signal ring count" which is basically how it processes its state.

There are other unit life cells that have a smaller bounding box, like dbell's P5760 unit Life cell. Or there are some that did something amazing that no metacell has done before, like calcyman's 0E0P metacell, so I don't think it generally has to be on the LifeWiki.

This metacell have the functionality of OTCAMP while having smaller size, which previously only Life metacells have this size. It's design is also unique, which "did something amazing that no metacell had done before".
Plus, there's only a few people had made a metacell, while APG made 2.

And what if their shift key is actually broken? Does that seem more important than broken grammar? Does that seem important enough to make offtopic posts in a thread intended for discussing cellular automata and patterns?

In my post, I posted two (hopefully not entirely offtopic) patterns to give examples. (The second pattern shows a possible way to deal with soups that appear to explode.) You just repeated part of what I wrote, without contributing anything that would be on-topic there.

What would be good general guidelines / suggestions / tips & tricks for creating your own ruletables/ruletrees? What is important to keep in mind?

For example:
  • If you intend to do soup search using apgsearch, ensure that it makes sense to apgsearch 16x16 soups that consist entirely of state-0 and state-1 cells. (Because apgsearch generates such soups for C1, and generates two-state soups for all official symmetries.)

If your CA is such that patterns made entirely out of state-0 and state-1 cells always keep this property, then it may be possible to create a ruletable with additional cellstates inserted between 0 and 1, so that apgsearching two-state 16x16 soups will produce multistate objects.
  • Add relevant comments/explanations after the @RULE line and before the next section (documentation of the CA, descriptions of individual cellstates when that makes sense, hyperlinks to sources / forum posts, etc.)

So, TblockLife would fall under the first category and Neut4AnnhHC0 would fall under the second?

Code: Select all

x = 192, y = 53, rule = B3/S23
33$42b4o$41b6o$40b2ob4o$41b2o3$41b2o$39bo6bo$38bo8bo$38bo8bo$38b9o3$42b

Rule:Neut4AnnhHC0 may be a good example of a rule without documentation. There is a hyperlink on the wiki, but I did not find an explanation of the CA in the linked posts.

I think Rule:TBlockLife is fine w.r.t. item 1, because a two-state (0/1) initial soup can evolve to contain all cellstates:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = TBlockLife
2b3o2bo2bo2b3o$4o2bo2bo2bo$3b4ob2obo3bo$o2bo2bo3b2o2bo$2o2b2o2bobobo$b
2o3bo4bo$b3o2bo2b4o2bo$b2ob7ob2obo$b2o2b3o2bobo2bo$8o2b2o$2b2o2bob8o$b
2ob3obob6o$2bo2b2o4b2o$4bo3bo2bo2bo$ob5ob3o2bobo$2bob6o3bobo!
So it makes sense to run apgsearch. In #1, I meant something like Symbiosis, where two-state (0/1) initial soups remain 0/1 forever; apgsearching them in C1/C2_1/.../D8_1/D8_4 doesn't make sense because that is equivalent to apgsearching a two-state CA.

The census b3s23/C1 exceeded 6000 trillion objects.

The original one is, of course! I meant that my modified version without the mess is "semi-natural" (based on the natural pattern and likely to occur naturally as well). Edited my post.

Semi-natural means that the pattern appeared from symmetric soup, not what after modified and removed mess.
Seems that confused you…sorry for that.

Quoting the wiki: There is no precise measure of naturalness

I know the term, but I used it confusingly too loosely... sorry.

It did appear (mixed with some ash) from an initial soup in C1. (The soups are below, with links in pattern comments.)

Hence it technically counts as "natural in the Catagolue-inspired sense" (i.e., if you define "natural" to be "has a legitimate C1 occurrence on Catagolue").

That being said, I'm not sure whether objects that are very rare in C1 should be considered natural.
For example, if a rare object has appeared only once or twice in b3s23/C1, that basically means it is very unnatural. There are no common easy reactions that allow this object to be formed.
