That would be a non-reflector (because of the "without suffering permanent damage" part).HerscheltheHerschel wrote: ↑October 19th, 2023, 12:31 pmSelf-destructing reflector: A reflector which reflects spaceships (mostly gliders) towards itself.
Growing reflector: a non-reflector that reflects growing spaceships. (Somewhat confusing, because it is not the (non-)reflector that would grow, but would that really matter by this point?)

Re: Create your own terminology
[terrible pun]
An eisoptrophobic cellular automaton is invariant under C4 but is not isotropic.
[/terrible pun]
There are two reasons for choosing that name:
- It sounds like a lengthened version of ‘isotropic’
- Eisoptrophobia is a fear of mirrors - when a random configuration is reflected in any way, the behaviour changes. However, when it is rotated, the behaviour is the same, only rotated.
Hence isotropic CA are a subset of anisotropic CA, and eisoptrophobic CA are also a subset of anisotropic CA, but isotropic CA are not a subset of eisoptrophobic CA.
I am extending this to propose terms for CA which are invariant under different symmetries (WIP):
- D8: isotropic
- C4: eisoptrophobic
- D4+: rookic/orthogonalic
- D4X: bishopic/diagonalic
- C2: I have no ideas for this
- D2|: I have no ideas for this
- D2/: I have no ideas for this
- C1: anisotropic

For chiral rules that are not necessarily isotropic, if I counted correctly (edit: 4z was missing) there are 140 individually toggleable conditions instead of 102 Hensel conditions (19 out of 51 neighbourhoods are chiral: 2k 2a 3n 3q 3j 3r 4k 4a 4n 4y 4j 4r 4z 5n 5q 5j 5r 6k 6a). So e.g. tlife (B3/S2-i34q) would remain two conditions from Life, but LeapLife (B2n3/S23-q) would become three conditions from Life since S3q is chiral.H. H. P. M. P. Re: Create your own terminology
An isotropic cellular automaton is described as layer-totalistic or onion, when there is a maximally symmetric partition of the neighbourhood into disjoint 'layers', such that the new state of a cell depends only on the total counts of alive cells in every 'layer' (and does not depend on the specific configuration of cells within a 'layer').
"Maximally symmetric" means that the partition of the neighbourhood into 'layers' must have the same symmetries as the neighbourhood itself, i.e. would remain unchanged under rotations and reflections.
All Life-like cellular automata are layer-totalistic with two layers (one layer is the central cell itself and another layer is the eight neighbours).
An old interesting example is the subset of two-state range-1 isotropic CA where the orthogonal neighbours are counted separately from the diagonal neighbours. In this case, the layers are the central cell itself (0..1), the orthogonal neighbours (0..4) and the diagonal neighbours (0..4), leading to 2 x 5 x 5 = 50 distinguishable conditions and 2^50 possible CA definitions.
This can be further extended to higher ranges, with the neighbourhood partitioned into layers either by the range or by the displacement. (In the latter case, a range-2 onion CA on the square grid could have up to 6 layers.)

Blasting cap: Generation 1 of pi-heptomino, which can sometimes be used as an induction coil and still life component. The name is inspired by the MIT term blasting cap for the pi-heptomino, because of generation 1. Not to be confused with cap.
Deblaster: A collision that turns a blasting cap into a cap.
Blaster: A collision that turns a cap into a blasting cap.
