If you take out the self-destruct circuitry from one of the "Engineered Diehards" in this thread so that it doesn't die at the end, then that would probably win by a million light-years.

EDIT: To keep the MCPS to the minimum, the self destruct circuitry that cleanly removes either the c/5 ship OR the gun station would need to be removed (but NOT both, because then there would be two "islands" of junk and the MCPS would be as ridiculously large as the lifespan).

Is there a better way for a 0E0P metacell to work? The current method seems convoluted, although reducing it may cost more complicated circuitry. I'm not going to go into full detail, as I'm still working on the concept of moving stored information for the ISPS, but here's an outline of a faster process:
Child cell replication is the same, with the exception of diagonal child cells. Next, all the cells count their neighbors (only the parent cells will give activation signals), then the parent cells follow S transitions, and child cells follow B transitions. Could a similar system be used in a new metacell or am I just talking nonsense?

That sounds like a system that could emulate outer-totalistic ("Life-like") rules only, where the neighbor count matters but the relative configuration of neighbors doesn't.

It's definitely true that a very much smaller 0E0P metacell could be designed, especially if the new version supported a much smaller set of rules. Being able to emulate any non-B0 isotropic rule needs a lot more circuitry than just counting a number between 0 and 8.

There is none. Consider a sqrtgun with n blocks. It takes n^2 generations to clear the blocks, but the MCPS is O(n), so you can get L/MCPS values as high as you want. This is a dumb example, but for any other engineered methuselah, you can make one of these with a higher L/MCPS. If we wanted to be a little more practical and find the longest-lasting pattern with the MCPS of the latest 10,000 cell diehard, the answer is also unsatisfactory: we strip everything {b} and make up for the difference in MCPS with toads at +8 MCPS per toad, advance the 58P5H1V1 to the 58-cell phase (MCPS is 64 instead of 70), and move it down all the way until it is separated by a B2n from the front toad. The optimal design would be reworked because we no longer need to worry about leaving enough room for the cleanup. If we can remove enough stuff, there might be enough to do something like Kazyan's trick to add a fuse which leaves behind many block eaters, though since it hits the c/5 spaceship it has to be triggered before that comes.
An extra optimization includes gliders sent after the 58P5H1V1 bouncing back and hitting the initial debris, maybe being sent out again and doing more damage (if gliders destroy the 58P5H1V1, it multiplies the lifespan by 5, and if they bounce back it doubles that, or triples it if they bounce twice). However, if this requires adding enough material to take away a toad, it's not worth it.

The 0E0P metacell was designed to be easy to design, which is why it uses the complicated emulation. The main optimizations are that cells are only constructed orthogonally to other cells, and metacells die in every generation (so we don't have to perform a survival test). While it's relatively easy to let them survive (do the survival test and add a clock to ensure they are synchronized), in order to make corner births without adding another recipe we would have to make the constructed edge cells construct corner cells, and then possibly delete them:

This is close enough to 2 generations of a von-Neumann neighborhood that you might as well just use a von Neumann neighborhood and not add the 4 corner inputs.
Another option is to limit yourself to rules without B1c2cn3c4c, so every born cell is orthogonally adjacent to a live cell, and skip the red-and-white step.

{a}: Actually, the use of an exploding spacefiller leaves open the possibility that a switch engine could be produced and escape, but if it does, you can remove it and add some one-time turners to destroy the caber tosser.

{b}: Yes, everything. This includes the green mangoes, the beehive syntheses (only there because we needed to add beehives outside the bounding box), the pink and yellow delayers, the orange cleanup, the eaters eating extra glider streams, and the turners. We need to have at least one extra object to ensure that the guns are all destroyed. There's probably a block or blinker that can destroy all the guns.

The enumeration that comes to mind is the 3G collision database -- basically, a systematic listing of all results of crashing one glider into {every evolutionary sequence that has a 2-glider synthesis}.

They're not organized in the way you want, probably, but they're (almost) all in there somewhere.

There's a script by gameoflifeboy that could be adapted to make an organized list for any target pattern(s) you might want to feed into it.

Yes, having a large square loop is the way to go if you want this to be runnable in Golly. Although I maintain that you want to be using the multistate emulation technique (used by the current 0E0P metacell) so that you only need to construct 4 neighbours instead of 8 (reasons detailed below).

I'm not sure that's true: the state transition logic is a very small fraction of the total amount of circuitry. And in the other direction, if you're not using the multistate emulation technique, then you'll need to do two things:

1. make all of the logic circuitry reusable rather than single-use (because cells can survive from one generation to the next, and an existing metacell can't construct itself in the same position that it's already occupying);
2. make each cell able to build neighbours in 8 different positions, with twice as many communication paths and trombone slides and suchlike;

and those (especially 1) are going to cost a lot more than the small amount of single-use circuitry for converting a 4-digit base-8 number to a unary delay in [0, 4095].

It's probably not going to be a huge task, really, to salvage the various pieces of logic and routing circuitry from the 0E0P metacell and redesign it to use a large square loop, Pavgran-style, without functionally changing anything else. That absolutely will run in Golly (several times slower than Pavgran's quadratic replicator, but that's still orders of magnitude faster than running the 0E0P even in the specialised StreamLife algorithm), and it will incorporate some fun things such crabstretchers that were absent from the original 0E0P metacell.

Note that, other than HashLife-friendliness, the biggest saving from using a single square loop is that we no longer need to use subroutines to construct the nucleus of the 0E0P metacell. (Recall that there are literally thousands of Snarks to coil it into a very tight loop, and those are built by some temporary circuitry which contains a literal loop to repeat a 'construct pair of Snarks and retract arm' recipe several hundred times in succession, with parallel construction arms to make this happen quickly enough to outrun the glider tape as it's filling up the incompletely-constructed nucleus.)

Indeed, it's likely that the population of this would be smaller than the existing 0E0P metacell (maybe by a factor of three or so -- i.e. 6 million cells instead of 18 million). The bounding box will be about 1000x bigger in each direction, but that's a small price to pay for the ability to run this in Golly.
What do you do with ill crystallographers? Take them to the mono-clinic!

No doubt you're right. I was thinking rather vaguely about the limit case, a version of the 0E0P metacell that is hard-coded to support only B3/S23. But if the multistate emulation trick isn't used, that still makes things painful, as you say -- and if it is used, then there's still a fair amount of circuitry needed, and hard-wiring all the transitions to produce B3/S23 isn't necessarily any smaller than working with a lookup table like the one in the current 0E0P.

The isotropic lookup table is not a huge percentage of the 0E0P's data, but it's not insignificant either; it's big enough to be "visible from space", so to speak.

In the process of writing up the final chapter for the Life textbook, I watched the 0E0P do a lot of its self-constructing. There was one situation where it looked to me like the 0E0P could be made quite a bit more efficient, though maybe it would only add up to a single factor-of-two reduction in the total size. As it's chopping up a big pattern that it's building into clusters, slsparse very often sends Corderships all the way across the diameter of the 0E0P, to areas that already had existing constructions nearby.

If it's possible to get slsparse to support the idea of "optional targets" -- leftover blocks that are not cleaned up until the last possible minute, that can then be used as convenient starting points for new construction -- then a surprising number of Cordership launches could be avoided, along with the long gaps in the recipe that follow each launch.

Is it cost-effective to use the larger crabstretcher seeds at the scale of construction of the current 0E0P, by the way? Or are Cordership seeds cheap enough that they're still competitive for let's say a push to the midpoint of an edge in the current 0E0P? Crabpush technology is obviously the way to go for a Pavgran-style big diamond 0E0P, but I don't remember how the cost would work out for a hypothetical 0E0P that's half the diameter of the current one.

Sure. It depends on exactly what you want to do, but for example if you add these lines to find-by-octohash-Python3.py before line 107 --

-- you'll see that the getoctohash() function is basically finding the "lexicographically least" version of the input cell list out of the eight possible orientations.

So if you want to display the octohash-canonical orientation of whatever pattern is passed in, adjust that script to return the cell list instead of the string version of it, and display it (removing the rest of the script that searches through a lot of fingerprint files to find where the pattern's fingerprint matches).

I'd call that elementary, yes.

I wouldn't necessarily call it a useful elementary conduit, though -- there are less than ten ticks available for some hypothetical next conduit to grab hold of that pi and keep it from destroying the block. Are any known pi-to-X conduits useful here?

Any conduit is allowed, but it has to be high clearance (The row with the domino spark should be free of any cells except perhaps other sparks) and at least both cells shouldn't be on in the previous generation. Also not something like these:

why is Sir Robin considered unsynthesizable? sure it might be made of tons of space dust and other junk which isn't periodic, but has an attempt even been made? I'm sure it's possible. its not a garden of eden (we would probably know if it was) so we could search for some of its predecessors and try to synthesize one of them. but why hasn't anyone even attempted it?

Synthesizing space dust usually requires creation of a complex stable pattern (which is usually comparatively easy, because it can be done incrementally, taking as much time and gliders as necessary). This pattern is then bombarded in such a way that most of it just happens to decay into the interior space dust, while additional gliders approach from the outside to carefully supply additional dust on the surface.

The larger this gets, the harder it is to find a way to make it work. In real life, changing the size of creatures runs into the square/cube law (e.g. skin surface (including heat dissipation area), cross-sectional area of legs (for weight support), and wing surface (for lift) increase with the square of the size increase, while volume, mass, and metabolic heat generation increase with the cube of the increase. In the same way, increasing the size of space dust runs into a similar problem; the complexity increases quadratically, while at the same time, the amount of surface space on the outside available to influence the interior increases only linearly.

A point comes where you just can't get gliders into the active area fast enough to do what is necessary. This is already a problem for many attempted syntheses of even small oscillators and spaceships, which require convoluted Rube-Goldberg still-lifes to be used as a starting point.

One common trick for getting a spark into a tight space is to build an extension that is a ludicrously large snake; as activation gliders arrive to do everything else, a single glider hits the end of the snake, creating a fuse that burns the snake until it finally collapses into the needed spark. This allows injection of a signal at speed c using a very narrow lane, which is efficient in terms of time and space in the final construction step, but which is expensive in terms of synthesizing the original core still-life.

Consider this analogy: much glider synthesis technology is similar to throwing grenades into a china shop, hoping that by precisely aiming and timing the grenades, the resulting shrapnel will form exactly what you want. It's fairly easy to throw a grenade to get one piece of shrapnel that's round - but throwing 5 grenades to get five round pieces of shrapnel to interlock like the Olympic rings would be virtually impossible.

Did anyone enumerate all distinct patterns with a given MCPS for smaller values? I just tried to enumerate patterns up to MCPS=4 manually and got 1, 2, 8, 38 respectively, but I might have missed/double-counted some patterns.
