Day & Night is usually defined as B3678/S34678. That does not distinguish between different neighbours and only counts how many of them are alive.

However, in this case you have to distinguish between orthogonal range-1 neighbours, diagonal range-1 neighbours, and range-2 neighbours:

[...] The weighted neighbourhood is isotropic range-2 "layer-totalistic", with the following weights:

Code: Select all

  1  1  1  1  1
  1 17 85 17  1
  1 85  0 85  1
  1 17 85 17  1
  1  1  1  1  1
[...]
Therefore, every "old way" birth/survival condition needs to be rewritten as a set of "new way" living conditions:
  • the "old way" B3 becomes a set of birth conditions: { B51-67,119-135,187-203,255-271 }
  • the "old way" B6 becomes { B238-254,306-322,374-390 }
  • the "old way" B7 becomes { B323-339,391-407 }
  • the "old way" B8 becomes { B408-424 }
  • therefore, the "old way" birth conditions (B3678) become the "new way" birth conditions { B51-67,119-135,187-203,238-271,306-339,374-424 }
  • likewise, the "old way" survival conditions (S34678) become the "new way" survival conditions { S51-84,119-152,187-220,238-288,306-356,374-424 }

I think removing the conditions B224, B229, B292, B294 results in another definition for CGoL

Fx77 works in the rule B36n/S23, but I couldn't find any *other* conduits currently known to work in this rule.

Is there a stable signal-turner which works in this rule?

Fx77 is already a conduit that is known to work in B36n/S23. Therefore there are currently known conduits.

I'm not aware of any Herschel conduits with output orientation L, Lx, R, or Rx that would work in that CA, though.

It might be possible to find an alien modification of R64, but I did not find anything obvious, and finding something non-obvious would go beyond basic questions.
There might be a B-heptomino-to-Herschel converter with output orientation F or Fx, which could be appended to HL79B (the first part of Lx138), but I did not find any known, and finding a new alien conduit goes beyond basic questions.

How rare are pulsars in HoneyLife (B38/S238), compared to life/pedestrian life?

Is there a Pedestrian Life-compatible synthesis of the Snark somewhere, or for other near-life rules (Eightlife, 4diagonal, HoneyLife, etc.)?

EDIT: So close, and probably amenable. (it works perfectly in Conway++, and B3/S236i where the snark doesn't work)

For many similar questions, one can do the following:
  1. Check the existing synthesis from Catagolue. It might work as is:

    Code: Select all

  2. If it fails, check which stages fail (if multistage incremental), and try to fix them.
  3. Check the history of improvements (old syntheses). Some of them might work where newer syntheses fail.
  4. Check Niemiec's glider synthesis database (lifesrch). Check octo3g/octohash/octo3obj databases for active objects. Some of that might remain functional.

Now what to do about the fact that the main life synthesis for 31.4 doesn't even produce 31.4 in Pedestrian Life?
In this case, the reaction is very specific and lucky. If you watched it carefully, you may have noticed that the lom sequence (the core of the reaction) breaks in Pedestrian Life and makes the main reaction unusable. It is even worse than this : if you stop the synthesis a few ticks before the still-life forms and try to run it in Pedestrian Life, it will still fail because of an unwanted birth in a critical region. If a modification of this component can be made to work, it will be highly nontrivial.
But this is not an unsolvable problem because 31.4 is a "nicely looking" still-life from the synthesis perspective : it has many hooks, tails or easily identifiable parts, which makes it easy to reduce into objects for which we know a synthesis.
Working backwards and trying obvious ways to simplify the still-life quickly leads to a synthesis :

Code: Select all

x = 201, y = 19, rule = B38/S23

If you want to find known components, you can look in Extrementhusiast's collection components_v4 (a little outdated ; see also the sorted version by Inferno a few posts below), in Marc Niemiec's database (there are many variants of each synthesis, and sometimes old, complicated syntheses that decompose reactions in a lot of small pieces are easier to modify), in Catagolue (by looking for known syntheses of similar objects) or directly in Shinjuku, using transfer.py (it is the most difficult source to use, but it often gives the best results).
Of course there is always the additionnal difficulty that many known syntheses won't work the same way in other rules.

I made several attempts to find a "well-behaved enough for soup searching" cellular automaton supporting this p661 oscillator (discovered by FWKnightship in b356s23/D8_1_spaceinvaders_stdin):

This oscillator is endemic to B356/S23 within the space of all two-state isotropic cellular automata with range-1 Moore neighbourhood. Hence I tried to increase the range and use a weighted neighbourhood.
I think this oscillator remains endemic to this CA within several other spaces:
  • "range-1 Moore, range-2 cross" (2 x 5 x 9 = 90 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 Moore, range-2 saltire" (2 x 5 x 9 = 90 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 Moore, range-3 cross" (2 x 5 x 9 = 90 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 Moore, range-3 saltire" (2 x 5 x 9 = 90 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 orthogonal, range-1 diagonal, range-2 cross" (2 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 250 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 orthogonal, range-1 diagonal, range-2 saltire" (2 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 250 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
  • "range-1 orthogonal, range-1 diagonal, range-3 cross" (2 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 250 distinguishable fully-specified conditions)
[...]

Can this p661 oscillator be found in some "well-behaved" two-state isotropic CA definable using a weighted neighbourhood, within some higher-range space containing B356/S23?
What is the largest subrulespace in the rulespace of CA definable using the below weighted neighbourhood (NW01010101010111551101015500550101115511010101010101) that has the property that every rule in that subrulespace supports the above p661 oscillator?

I try to make a rule with 3 states (air, ice, water) and following rules:
-If air is adjacent to 3 ice cells except the a3 configurations, then it will be an ice in next generation.
-If ice is adjacent to 2 or 3 ice cells, then it stays being ice.
-If water has at least 1 ice neighbor on west, south or east, it will be an ice.
-If non-ice has water on north and non-ice in both upper corners, it will be a water.
-Ice turn into a water which turns into an air by default.

I tried to insert it to Golly 4.3, but it doesn't work properly. I tried to rename it (both file name and 1st line), but then an error occur. Is my rule table incorrect? Or maybe Golly is broken?

There's no "reflect" symmetry, but there is a "rotate4reflect" symmetry. The rule is pretty explosive though, and as a side effect "If water has at least 1 ice neighbor on west, south or east, it will be an ice" is turned to "If water has at least 1 ice neighbor in any orthogonal direction, it will be an ice".

Code: Select all

#C [[ ZOOM 8 TRACK -3/87 -1/87 ]]
x = 4, y = 5, rule = B35ay/S2-i3-e4ey5j

Unrelated, but out of curiosity, what rule is your profile animation from? Referring to the glider-block to b-heptomino spaceship loop.
Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

The rule it's from is B35ay/S2-i3-e4ey5j. It's the same spaceship as my signature.

"reflect" symmetry exists, because it works in LifeViewer. I saw one post with a rule that used it and it worked. What should I do to implement this rule (other than changing it) in Golly 4.3 if "reflect" symmetry doesn't work in it?

Surprisingly, it seems like I managed to fix it by making it more explicit and changing "reflect" to "reflect_horizontal". Does this work as intended?

Is there a otalistic or Isotropic Non-totalistic rule where life's glider is turned 90 degrees by an simple STABLE alien reflector (not alien snarks or snark64)? If so, how many different alien reflector rules are known?

What is the simplest 90 degree glider turner in any Totalistic or Isotropic Non-totalistic rule?

EDIT:

Well, I don't know what you mean by "standard neighborhood rule", there are many different neighbourhoods (von Neumann, Moore, higher-range generalisations, other shapes, 1D, 3D, ...) that were investigated.
Meant totalistic and isotropic non-totalistic.

Note also that neither that question nor your question requires that the reflector be stable, and it's often easier to find a periodic spaceship reflector (of some period) as long as there's a small common spaceship and a sparky oscillator.
Sorry, I forgot to mention I am looking at Stable reflectors.

However, there was a recent question that appears to be similar, see the quote below.
