In reality, such rumours and fears are absolutely unfounded. Lepas are totally safe, and are a great choice as a pet for kids.

Also, here are some other choices for your kids. Please note that I am not a certified pet-dealer - if you have a pet that has gone rogue, I am not responsible for it. I have owned all the pets below, and none of them have gone rogue so far.

- Glider (Life): a small, fast pet. Get a hamster ring made out of buckaroos if you want this pet.
- Loafer (Life): quite slow, and tiny, making this irresistibly cute.
- Rocket (Day and Night): a large, robust pet you can ride on your way to work.
- Lepa (LeapLife): has a weird walking pattern, recommended for people who like things that are slightly out of the ordinary.
- c/17o pondpusher (B34c/S234c): you can use this as a lilypad and hopefully no one will notice.
- c/6d (JustFriends): tiny and small, like the Loafer. It's small size makes it hard to catch when it has moved out of your house.
- Factorialship (Factorio): see owner's note below, my personal favourite.

In general:
- Never choose a ship in an explosive rule. If by chance it happens to collide into one of your precious equipment, it might spew cells everywhere, with you having no hope of cleaning up this mess. If you want a pet for your children, strictly no explosive rules. Chaotic ones are OK, though, but never choose ships in rules that are extremely slow to apgsearch.
- Never choose a ship in a non-isotropic rule. When it is forced to go in another direction it might disintegrate.
- This is more of a precaution than something to be followed, but never choose a non-monotonic ship. You'll sometimes see it go backward for a while, and then, when you least expect it, it will stab you! Non-monotonic from the back is OK, but make sure to put something soft on the back of it (like a pillow).

Get a small and slow ship. The smaller and slower the better!

OWNER'S NOTE: The factorialship is safe to handle, though a bit sharp on one end. (Screw that - it's sharp on both ends, so be extra careful. The safest route is to purchase four FWKnightship-brand P9s and trap the factorialship in a shuttle made out of these oscillators.)

Camel (Hash2): Has weird walking pattern like Lepa, but it moves quite slow. It's also quite small. You can ride it all the way through the deserts and to work.
ERS1 (Life): Quite small, slower than LWSS. Don't worry if something hurts it, as it can heals itself. But still be careful not to manually hurt it.

From the Infinite Soup thread:

A pattern that I call it B emerges from the infinite soup through 4 gliders, clearing everything else around it, as like self-defence. The B itself can't been destructed by any means, as it can repair itself.
It connects to the internet in the infinite universe, which contains everything found from year 1912 to 212801804892348, then extract a engine-based p3419414347 oscillator via glider synthesis.
B makes a 0E0P metacell via RCT4, which the metacell start to self-replicate until it touches B. However B can self-repair and self-defence, so that 0E0P metacell just dies.
After there're TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(10) 0E0P metacells in the universe, B controls the metacells to turn into (meta^^^^^^^^8)-gliders simulating RCT4 constructing meta-B.
