In reality, such rumours and fears are absolutely unfounded. Lepas are totally safe, and are a great choice as a pet for kids.
Also, here are some other choices for your kids. Please note that I am not a certified pet-dealer - if you have a pet that has gone rogue, I am not responsible for it. I have owned all the pets below, and none of them have gone rogue so far.

- Glider (Life): a small, fast pet. Get a hamster ring made out of buckaroos if you want this pet.
- Loafer (Life): quite slow, and tiny, making this irresistibly cute.
- Rocket (Day and Night): a large, robust pet you can ride on your way to work.
- Lepa (LeapLife): has a weird walking pattern, recommended for people who like things that are slightly out of the ordinary.
- c/17o pondpusher (B34c/S234c): you can use this as a lilypad and hopefully no one will notice.
- c/6d (JustFriends): tiny and small, like the Loafer. It's small size makes it hard to catch when it has moved out of your house.
- Factorialship (Factorio): see owner's note below, my personal favourite.

In general:
- Never choose a ship in an explosive rule. If by chance it happens to collide into one of your precious equipment, it might spew cells everywhere, with you having no hope of cleaning up this mess. If you want a pet for your children, strictly no explosive rules. Chaotic ones are OK, though, but never choose ships in rules that are extremely slow to apgsearch.
- Never choose a ship in a non-isotropic rule. When it is forced to go in another direction it might disintegrate.
- This is more of a precaution than something to be followed, but never choose a non-monotonic ship. You'll sometimes see it go backward for a while, and then, when you least expect it, it will stab you! Non-monotonic from the back is OK, but make sure to put something soft on the back of it (like a pillow).

Get a small and slow ship. The smaller and slower the better!

If you have other species that you want to showcase, please post a short description of each!

OWNER'S NOTE: The factorialship is safe to handle, though a bit sharp on one end. (Screw that - it's sharp on both ends, so be extra careful. The safest route is to purchase four FWKnightship-brand P9s and trap the factorialship in a shuttle made out of these oscillators.)

Sorry for not having camel's catagolue link
Camel (Hash2): Has weird walking pattern like Lepa, but it moves quite slow. It's also quite small. You can ride it all the way through the deserts and to work.
ERS1 (Life): Quite small, slower than LWSS. Don't worry if something hurts it, as it can heals itself. But still be careful not to manually hurt it.
Most LtL patterns under 8x8 bounding box and smallest LtL camelship

And now, Somebody presents:

Life Taken Literally

An R will last 1103 generations, although a W and a Z will only last 2.

If you remove a cell from a either a B or its predecessors, it will become a Pi predecessor.

You need 3 gliders to synthesise a spaceship that travels at half the speed of light.

You'd also only need 8 gliders to synthesise an entire galaxy.

And a pulsar would only need 3 gliders too.

That's All Folksbecause i'm out of ideas

apgsearch is like Santa Claus, except it gives you presents every day when you ask for it, and is very happy to oblige, for all the presents it gives are strictly virtual and have no physical manifestation. Best of all, instead of saying "ho ho ho", it says "haul haul haul".

===================================================================================================

WANTED

Name: real name unknown, goes under the pseudonym of 'Every Rulegolfer's Dream'

Description:
- has many small stable objects, many fitting under a strict mathematical pattern
- has some interesting and counterintuitive mathematical properties involving soup constraints or otherwise
- has nontrivial small metacells which emulate other, related, interesting rules (with different neighbourhoods)
- easy spark-based construction due to the long-ish affect range of the sparks
- has at least eight small natural ships: two orthogonal (one at terminal velocity), two diagonal (one at terminal velocity), knightwise (at terminal velocity), one SMOS, one SMOI, and one ship that is unusually high period
- has a small splitter and eater for at least one orthogonal and diagonal ship (i.e. is Turing-complete and a small orthogonoid and demonoid is possible)
- has families of small easily-adjustable ships
- has XOR replicators which can make XOR-replicator-based ships
- has a high-ish period failedrep that is either an oscillator or a ship, and/or can be corderized to make ships
- is apgsearchable with more than 5000 soups per second on eight cores

If you can find this rule, send it to me through PM!

One thing is known about this rule - it is not a lazy mashup of Factorio and SoManyShips2.

Somehow Apgsearch Claus speaks differently from me, causing me to unable to get his presents.
Also I know he have 2^65536 presents to give. That's why he can give presents everyday.

Normal person: What...how can these mess become a LWSS and 2 ovals?
Life enthusiast: That's not enough. I'll need to fuse a beehive on the glider to get my LWSS back, and you need to tear another beehive to get your toad back.
Normal person: I'm confused. Show me how to do that.
Life enthusiast: Finally got our pet back, and there's an extra block here.

From the Infinite Soup thread:
b-engine wrote:

A pattern that I call it B emerges from the infinite soup through 4 gliders, clearing everything else around it, as like self-defence. The B itself can't been destructed by any means, as it can repair itself.
It connects to the internet in the infinite universe, which contains everything found from year 1912 to 212801804892348, then extract a engine-based p3419414347 oscillator via glider synthesis.
B makes a 0E0P metacell via RCT4, which the metacell start to self-replicate until it touches B. However B can self-repair and self-defence, so that 0E0P metacell just dies.
After there're TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(TREE(10) 0E0P metacells in the universe, B controls the metacells to turn into (meta^^^^^^^^8)-gliders simulating RCT4 constructing meta-B.
To be continued...

Once a personal quantum computer is in my house, I'll spawn an infinite soup so I own infinite discoveries. In those future years POTY and OCADOTY will be pointless. This also means that we'll have every single knowledge available in the entire universe.
Imagine that every atoms in the universe are each a single cell in the Life universe...
