Engineered diehards without infinite growth, non-standard-like spaceships, and/or spaceship chasing

Post by HerscheltheHerschel » December 12th, 2023, 8:39 am

This is a thread for engineered diehards without infinite growth, non-standard-like spaceships, and/or spaceship chasing
They can contain any type of complex oscillator/still life, but no infinite growth, non-standard-like spaceships, and/or spaceship chasing.

Here is a rough and incomplete schematic of one:
Image

(A standard-like spaceship is any spaceship that looks like a standard one, for example standard spaceships, standard spaceship flotillas, Coe ships, and Schick engines. A non-standard-like spaceship is any spaceship which isn't standard-like).

I think I don't understand the constraints for this thread. According to your schematic, gliders are allowed. However, gliders are standard spaceships, which aren't allowed.
Further, what are restrictions on population/bounding box/MCPS/lifespan to decide what is interesting and what is not?

I don't have any restrictions on that, except the obvious restriction that prevents the glider + blonk nonsense.
Also, standards spaceships are allowed because they are considered standard-like spaceships.

I think this thread should go to Sandbox. Without additional rules, there are too many possibilities.

What do you mean by 'simple, isolated OTT loops'? I can only guess it is something that is meant to exclude things posted above so far, and yet include the schematic in the first post of this thread. Reading literally, 'OTT loop' is self-contradictory, unless you mean loop the 10-bit still life used as an one-time turner.

Instead of calling this thread “Engineered diehards without infinite growth, non-standard-like spaceships, and/or spaceship chasing” I would suggest calling it a simpler name such as “Purely Still-life Based Diehards” or “Well Bounded Diehards” (a pun on well grounded). I honestly think changing the name of the thread would give people a better understanding of what you want.

I agree with AlbertArmStain: Since you don't want giant boat loops, can you tell us what you do want to see? It's not clear to me how the example in the original post is different from a boat loop. You also mentioned "the obvious restriction that prevents the glider + blonk nonsense," but it was so obvious that no one else got it.

If boat loops are bad, there should be some limitation to make them less attractive. This was why the other diehard thread set a hard limit on the bounding box of the pattern, because that way people had to be creative rather than just adding another boat.

By the way, the first diehard shows the problem with using MCPS. Look at the top area, with the scattered blocks and turners. How obvious was it that the minimal covering polyplet (and I am not entirely sure it is minimal) included a line from the loaf to the block that stopped by the eater? Or would a line from the long boat to that line then an offshoot to the other block have been shorter? (it's the same length)

EDIT: Confocaloid helped show how obvious the MCPS problem is, by finding a one-cell reduction counteracted by a cell I forgot to add.

For the top area, the version on the right is smaller by one blue cell, but larger by one red cell which was missing to connect the block that is part of the large still life to the rest

How about a 20000 cell bounding box limit? For the maximum ammount of time, maybe use a delay device? I decided to make one myself, though it is not complete.

Code: Select all

x = 97, y = 98, rule = B3/S23

Here is a potentially useful long-lived and sparky pure glider generator:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
o$3ob2o$5b2o$bo11$3bo$3b2o!
superstrings, fuses, waves, wicks, and agars are cool

Here is another one:
