Just searched the website that the spammer left on many pages they vandalised. Apparently the wiki contains NSFW and 90% of all spam posts and uploads were based on the website.

Can I be trusted to edit posts? I'm just getting into CGOL but I understand a lot of the concepts and I won't mess around with the pages. If I can't that's fine; I just thought the only reason this existed was to prevent bots and spammers but maybe I'm wrong. If you can give me permission to edit posts, that would be great! :)

You've got it right. Normally I just add a "like" to request posts in this thread (to signify that the request has been taken care of). But in this case -- welcome to the forums and the LifeWiki!

Actually 'pages' - articles are just those pages directly intended for LifeWiki readers (basically, the main namespace and the OCA namespace). Userpages, templates, talk pages, etc. aren't articles.

"Article" has a completely different meaning on LifeWiki than it does on Wikipedia.

Well, I dunno. "LifeWiki:Articles" are indeed something completely different from Wikipedia articles, but I think it's still just fine to call main-namespace and OCA-namespace pages on the LifeWiki "articles", and basically everything else "not articles".

LifeWiki:Articles is an attempt to reserve a space for collaborative LifeViewer-illustrated articles -- which could end up looking pretty good in that format, I think. No "LifeWiki:Articles" articles have been completed as yet, but maybe someday some will be!

Done! Maybe try posting some of your rulegolfing attempts on the OCA board here on the forums first, though.

The LifeWiki isn't usually the first place where this community hears about new results. It's good to give the local experts here on the forums a few opportunities to give you gentle hints about the notability of things -- before you jump right in to creating LifeWiki articles.

I would like a trusting (same name as here) for the entire purpose of uploading ruletables to save space on the forums and/or in my own Lifeviewer usage. :)

Relatedly, there doesn't appear to be a notability policy on rules/OCA other than the GNG. Should there be? There are plenty of rules with no article that have (subjectively) interesting properties (e.g. ShipWorld) but I'm not sure what the requirements are for a standalone OCA-space article

Sure! confocaloid and I have been exchanging private messages quite regularly, recently -- keeping things off the forums, since the community seemed pretty clear that lots more Wallotext discussions in public on this topic wouldn't be appreciated.

If confocaloid decides to agree to try following LW:DR rules, a public statement of that intention is all that's needed to get that trusted flag turned back on again. This thread would be as good a place as any to post that statement.

Of course other moderators might decide to get involved, in which case there might be other ways to get that trusted flag restored, and/or other conditions that they might want to mention. But for the moment it seems like I'm the one who is "on the job" (or maybe I mean "on the hook") for this issue.

My latest edit ( https://conwaylife.com/w/index.php?diff ... did=142757 ) specifically linked to LifeWiki:Dispute resolution, both in the edit summary and in the content change. It would be strange for me to link to that policy page, if I didn't intend to follow it myself.

[...] Unfortunately, if you keep on implicitly insisting that what you've been doing is not edit warring ... [...]
This claim is false. Considering its context, I read it as a way to distract attention, and to avoid discussing the underlying issues / resolving the actual disagreements.
It is false because my linked post in particular doesn't contain any statements at all about whether or not something is edit warring. And more generally, I don't remember or find any cases when I was "insisting" that something I did "is not edit warring".

I don't really know why they make false claims. Perhaps they don't understand that the claim is false, or maybe they do understand but believe this is a good thing to do.
From my own direct experience, this is a consistent pattern (of asserting something that is known to be incorrect), rather than an isolated case. Below is quoted another example where they made a false assertion ("fairly broad agreement" etc.) Only ~2 months later they silently edited the post to add a remark that could probably be read as admission that the claim was incorrect --

I think the linked post specifically clarifies that existence of four-row Gardens of Eden is still open...
Seems like there's probably fairly broad agreement that a '"four-row Garden of Eden" implies that all required cells fit in four rows. The main thing that leaves the question still open is the lack of any independent review or verification.

EDIT 9/22/2023: See below -- confocaloid is completely correct on this. Looking back at the exchange today, I see that I added a "like" to that post when it was made. Just adding this note now to make sure the resolution was clear.
I think making false claims is destructive.

here's the RLE [...]
This is indeed a period-408 oscillator. However, this oscillator is trivial, because no single cell oscillates with period 408.
(There are 60 cells oscillating with period 17, 28 cells oscillating with period 12, 40 cells oscillating with period 8, one cell oscillating with period 3, and 64 cells that are always alive (stator cells).)
Trivial oscillators are not usually considered interesting, because it is easy to make them by placing two different oscillators near each other.

You can post patterns like this, by putting the RLE inside
...
tags:

Code: Select all

x = 37, y = 30, rule = B3/S23
