Last year we used a 5-star voting system, rather than the 3-star system used in earlier years. Should we stick with 5 stars, switch back to 3 stars, or do something different?
I'd vote for 3-star system.

I say we keep the 5-star system, it offers better estimates on what people rate patterns. Using the 3-star scale has less options and precision than the 5-star scale.

It doesn't matter too much to me. Mathematically, the best voting system anyone has been able to find is voting from 0 to maximum on a continuum, but at this point, it's more a matter of human psychology than mathematics. "0-3 stars for each entry" is still way better than what countries use for elections.

I would prefer if the range was 0-3, as in earlier years. Allowing to choose between 0 and 3 stars offers enough choice, while still keeping the choice 'no stars' distinguishable from '*', the choice '*' distinguishable from '**', and the choice '**' distinguishable from '***'.

It's been a week, and I haven't seen any objections to the nominee list, so I think we can consider it finalized. There were only four comments on the voting system (with no likes), two for the three-star system, one for the five-star system and one no-opinion. Based on that, I suppose we would go back to three stars, although there might still be time for anyone with a strong opinion to say something.

The only other thing to consider is the voting period. I personally think a month-long voting period seems reasonable, so, assuming we start voting in the next few days, I propose the end of August as the end of the voting period. Thoughts?

I suggest at least one month, beginning from the date when the voting starts. (It is unknown when the voting starts, so it is unknown when it ends.)

Is this assuming voting begins tomorrow (Aug 1, a logical start date) ?
Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.

No, this is avoiding any assumptions about when the voting begins.
The previous suggestion ("the end of August") was based on an implicit assumption that the voting begins before August 1.

I'm not sure one month would be enough time. But if the actual voting begins August 12 (for example) then it shouldn't end before September 12 at least.

Ah.

So are we waiting on a finalized list or something else?

I believe we are only waiting for someone to start the voting thread. Since I seem to have taken over the organization, I'll create the voting thread as soon as I get it composed. We will use the 3-star voting system. Voting will end at the end of August anywhere on Earth. The voting period can potentially be extended if need be. Please discuss any issues you have in this thread.

Edit: okay, the voting thread is up. Let me know if you see any problems so that they can be corrected quickly.
