These puffers are amazing. I'm new and I have no idea how you even begin engineering such things. Are puffers of all famous patterns known ? Is it proved that we can make puffers for all patterns ? These are the coolest things ever.

Technically, yes, we know exactly how to make a puffer for anything that we have a glider synthesis for. (Or it would be a rake if the constructed object is a spaceship, or a quadratic-growth pattern if the object is a rake, or a spaceship if the object is a diehard, etc., etc.)

With some work, we could even write a script that would take an input glider synthesis and build a puffer or rake for it. So we could have the script build a puffer for p116 R pentomino shuttles, or a rake for sideways Canada Greys.

The thing is, those puffers and rakes would be extremely high-period. The examples above are special-case low periods. In general we don't know a way to build puffers with reasonably low periods, for complex patterns like that.

For the general method of constructing puffers, probably just work through the relevant parts of the Life textbook. See page 163 for a breakdown of the construction of a Gosper glider gun breeder, for example.

To build puffers for more complicated syntheses, you'll have to solve various technical problems -- find sufficiently high-period forerakes and backrakes, figure out that particular rake's limitations as far as placing gliders close to each other traveling in the same direction, look at the particular glider recipe you want to use and work out which gliders can't be placed easily by the high-period rake, adjust the glider recipe so that it's compatible after all, or else work out how to build new rakes (maybe using temporary one-time turners or glider collisions).

When you've done all of that, you'll probably find that you have a really huge and awkward, very high period but functional puffer for the whatever-it-is. A construction like that might really not end up being all that interesting to very many people. There's not much of a market, you might say, for a huge rake that shoots sideways Canada Grey spaceships (for example) once every so-many-million ticks.

A Canada Grey gun might be a somewhat more interesting exercise (and, yes, the technology is available to build one of those, too, but nobody has taken the time to do it -- it would be similarly huge and awkward.)

amling's puffers are definitely low-period special cases. There's no general guaranteed method for either discovering or constructing more of these. These special-case puffers are moderately interesting, but it's only in rare cases that they end up being usable to solve any larger problems.

I.e., any given discovery of this special-case type is usually something of a "dead end" -- it's not too likely to lead to an interesting chain of further discoveries, because the mechanism is limited to a specific source puffer and period.

The post in question is a fine example of the kinds of likely "dead ends" that I'm talking about. That post wasn't on the Spaceship Discussion thread, where the chain of further discoveries was happening. It was here in the Useless Discoveries thread, and it showed some moderately interesting special-case puffers: a p24 cis-mirrored bookend puffer, and then an optional attachment that converted those to vases.

For any specific spacing of this kind of moderately rare but not really rare puffed object, it's kind of unlikely that someone will then be able to say, "Aha! I've been looking for a source of [cis-mirrored bookends|vases] with that exact spacing -- here's a wonderfully handy thing that you can do with that specific chain of objects."

So it's not the original discovery that was the likely dead end, it was the special-case puffers. There are an incredible number of these that are fairly easy to discover -- it's the natural state of these kinds of active puffers to leave something behind at some period.

It just ends up being exhausting trying to collect and catalogue them all, because there will always be a ton more of them just on the other side of whatever notability criteria you decide on for the collection.

EDIT: All of that said, on a second reading, Tinker Magus's second round of questions were about "amling's puffers", and my response mentioned "amling's puffers" -- but the ones I was really trying to talk about were C_R_116's puffers using amling's initial discovery. That was totally a mistake on my part.

Seems like amling's initial double-snake puffer produces something that's so rare that the rarity is not even really measurable -- definitely not in the same category as the puffers Tinker Magus had originally quoted and asked about.
