If you want to nominate a pattern, then you do it in this thread. The only rules are that

1) the pattern in question works in B3/S23
2) that it was discovered in the year 2023

IMO multiple people directly editing a wiki page with nominations is a bad idea
(a) That is an invitation for edit conflicts (both technical and otherwise).
(b) That would exclude people who are not on the wiki.

Someone call it Versatile64, it's a good name I think.

Does that mean that you're asking people not to edit the wiki page? If so, that's definitely part of standard procedure for user pages -- people shouldn't edit other people's user pages unless those pages are intended as collaborative collection points.

The page looks very much like a collaborative collection point, and to a certain extent it has been used that way up to now.

It seemed like that worked reasonably well last year -- aside from the difficulty of getting the whole project finished in a reasonable amount of time, anyway! There were no edit conflicts to speak of that I can recall, and certainly no edit wars. So I'd be somewhat surprised if it was any different this year.

Obviously I'm not C28 and can't speak for them. But collaboration is hard. If past experience is any guide, it is a better idea to collect nominations as forum posts in a forum thread, and avoid the situation when many people edit a single page.

well, the only reason i created the wiki page was to have a list of patterns that i thought could get nominated for POTY 2023. i'm not exactly against editing the page, but i do fear the possiblility of a edit war, like confocaloid mentioned, or some sort of vandalism.

That's totally up to you. It's a gray area: userspace wiki pages are generally supposed to be left alone by anyone other than the user -- if that's what the user wants. Conversely, if you want help adding to and maintaining that page, just state that clearly instead, and then anyone who wants to can feel free to make improvements.

I'm not sure what past experience confocaloid is referring to. The POTY 2022 nominations seem to be the past experience that's relevant here. Notice the near-complete lack of controversy in the edit history -- they're just nominations, so everybody is just looking for good solid ways to describe and document things. For various reasons, it pretty much took a village to get that voting project completed.

No need to be too worried about edit wars, I wouldn't think -- we have the LW:DR rules in place to prevent those, and it's all non-controversial stuff anyway. You can always change the rules mid-stream if you don't like how things are working out. Again, it's your user page, so you can put whatever guidance you want to at the top of the page, and people will generally follow that. Here's what Macbi put at the top of last year's nomination table:

It seems to me that what caused the delay for POTY 2022 was that the nomination cleanup job is really too much for one person to complete solo. Collaboration can really help. We had a very similar problem with POTY 2021; in that case it was MathAndCode instead of Macbi who did a whole pile of good initial work, and then was unable to follow through and finish all of the setup that needed to be done.

Yup, all true. And those linked user pages are all "collaborative collection point" type pages, where it makes sense for multiple LifeWiki editors to contribute when something new shows up that can be added.

I've added a sentence to the Policies and Guidelines page to call out that particular type of user page.

I've also moved over into the Help pages a longer set of "Help:User pages" rules and regulations, which Nathaniel wrote up over a month ago, but never got around to moving into the LifeWiki: namespace.

Entry #23 in the wiki page is the 5-glider synthesis of amphisbaena -- would it be good to merge or replace that entry with the pattern-group entry for the efficient synthesis projects (11-in-5 / 17-in-15 / 15-in-10)?

And also for entry #22 (the p76 pi shuttle), why did you nominate this as a separate entry as the other SKOPs (if there is already a group entry, entry #24, for that)? (I understand the reason behind the separate nominations for the p19 and p41, but is the p76 significant enough for its own entry?)

A pulse divider is a mechanism that lets every n-th pulse that reaches it pass through, and deletes all the rest, where n > 1 and the pulses are typically spaceships or Herschels.
A stable pulse divider can accept any regular or irregular input stream as long as consecutive pulses are separated by at least t ticks, where t is the repeat time.

c/3 Against-the-Grain Greyships

On August 31, 2023 Keith Amling constructed the first c/3 grayship where the stripes are perpendicular to the direction of travel ("against-the-grain"). Such grayships were previously only known to travel at speed c/2 with period 4.

A c/3 against-the-grain greyship must have period at least 6, which is typically far too high to reliably search at. Fortunately in this case, Amling's amazing search tools and a neat trick by Hartmut Holzwart and Jason Summers allowed this to be completed almost entirely with period-3 components. In a moment I will endeavor to explain how this is accomplished in detail, with a bit of history thrown in, but first let's see the actual ship:

How can a greyship change its stripes?

You may be familiar with the classic 2c/3 signal traveling along a diagonal seam between horizontal and vertical stripes. What you may not realize is that the standard 2c/3 signal is actually made up of two "half signals". By manually advancing only the second (i.e., upper left most) half signal by 9 generations, the two now-adjacent half signals become one standard signal! But we don't need or want a proper signal here. For making greyships, the movement of the seam is the desirable outcome, it allows the seam to move with the potential ship, so we want subsequent half signals to have the same orientation.

This seam-moving half signal idea was first developed in a discussion between Hartmut Holzwart and Jason Summers from November 2005 to January 2006 after Holzwart incidentally found a 2c/4 seam-moving reaction in an ordinary against-the-grain greyship search. By placing half signals at varying distances, different seam-moving speeds can be achieved. Different placements also need to be used depending on whether the conversion is vertical-to-horizontal (v-to-h) or horizontal-to-vertical (h-to-v). Here are the placements for 2c/6 movement:

Notice that there is only one 2c/6 v-to-h converter, but there are three h-to-v converters. The bottom left is the "expected" h-to-v converter, where individual half signals all have the same orientation. By contrast, the other two h-to-v converters each have three times as many half signals as the first fitting on the same seam, two with the same orientation and one with the opposite orientation. There's nothing special about any of these h-to-v converters in particular. Amling's ship just happens to use the middle converter.

Of course, it isn't enough to just have these stripe converters. We need to connect them somehow. The difficulty is that these stripe converters are period 6, and 2c/6 searches have little chance of succeeding both because 2c/6 components are rarer than period-3 components and because p6 searches inherently take longer than p3 searches. On May 1, 2021 Holzwart managed to find the symmetric back end shown in the final spaceship, but the back end is almost always the easy part.

Using powerful new search tools, Keith Amling was able to reduce the side and front connection problems from p6 to p3 and then solved them at the lower period. On close inspection, you should be able to see that virtually no part of the connecting components has period 6. It isn't just the period reduction that's impressive here. It would still be quite difficult to complete the p3 parts using previous tools even if the period reduction were given.
