A compact switchable glider gun

It turns out that the age-old PRNG topic isn't exhausted yet. Here is a compact way to build a toggleable glider gun (the PRNGs are just a handy way to build a demo).

For some even periods a half-period gun can be used (not for all even periods though; the p46 had to be detuned to work).

Here is a period 40 (also tested with 42, 44, 50, 52, 54):

The switch glider is offset by a half-diagonal to simplify the gun. The switch on the right behaves differently (cap the feedback loop to check), but the patterns have the same period (can be verified with oscar and compared against Dean Hickerson's table in oscillator-stamp-collection-31January2023.rle).

Here is a 5x6 diehard that lasts 269 ticks. It beats my previous record of 6x6 (or smaller) diehards by 15 ticks.

Imo that's a pretty impressive lifespan for a decaplet diehard. I think it would be worth it to exhaustively search all polyplets up to some size to see how they evolve. This has been done to size six and below, according to LifeWiki. But you could go further. There are 758381 decaplets. It would be doable to find the longest-lasting vanishing polyplet of size ten or less. It might even be this one, who knows. If something like this has already been done, I would love to know.

Edit: I was able to find a better 5x6 form. This one has only 11 cells instead of 14 and lasts 270 ticks:

We don't know. There was a large search a few months ago that was R + blonk + blonk systematically done (not sure if pi + blonk + blonk, also 11, was done or not, or if R + blonk + blonk was even completed), but the goal of that one was to find infinite growth patterns, so I believe everything that didn't go infinite was discarded. The search might have found a lack of oscillators of specific periods (e.g. if it checked for stabilization via 120, a p7 would have stood out), but that wouldn't be relevant to methuselahs anyway.

It is a predecessor of a known diehard pattern that has occured naturally multiple times. Generation 24 seems to be the common bottleneck. I was able to get surprisingly far in optimizing its bounding box.

Recently I have thought about the following question: Which periodic objects don't have any predecessors with a smaller or equal population other than themselves (even more distant predecessors)? At least blinker, tub and clock are like this, and probably snake as well. But are there any others? Maybe canoe or longer extensions of the snake and canoe?
